Interview Challenge Question
Example of Problem-solving
Preparing for a "challenge question" during your job interview is worth its weight in gold. The company may place a lot of weight on how you handled a challenging problem on the job. Use this example to think about your own experience and to be on top of your game with your answer.

Question: Provide a specific example of a difficult and challenging problem you have solved as a foreman of a civil directional drilling crew in the field, and provide specific details of your personal role in solving this problem.

As a foreman of a civil directional drilling crew, I have had the opportunity to solve a number of complex and challenging problems in the field. One particular problem that stands out to me is an issue that arose with a project I was managing in the summer of 2020.

The project, which was a directional drilling job for a new sewer line, was running smoothly until we encountered an unexpected obstacle. We had been drilling through a particularly dense layer of clay, which required us to make frequent adjustments to our drilling path. Unfortunately, we ran into a problem when the clay became so dense that our drills couldn't penetrate it any further.

As the foreman of the crew, I took it upon myself to solve this problem. First, I consulted with a number of experts to determine the best way to tackle the issue. After a thorough analysis, I determined that the best course of action would be to use a specialized drill bit designed for drilling through clay.
I then worked with my crew to ensure that the new drill bit was properly installed and that all safety protocols were followed. Once the bit was in place, we were able to resume drilling and complete the project successfully.
The successful resolution of this problem was a testament to my leadership qualities as a foreman and my commitment to finding solutions to complex and challenging problems. My experience in this situation has helped build my expertise in the field and has given me the confidence to tackle even the most daunting of projects.

Good luck.
